Prior to the municipal enforcement on January 1, 2014, the village was more than 50,000 inhabitants in a period of more than ten years. Mt. Iwate is located in the northwest of the city, and the foothills are widely located. The east end of the city limits is along the Kitakami River and the southern tip of the Shizukuishi River.
