It is the main city which has the second population in the prefecture next to Miyazaki City. Located on the southwest edge of Miyazaki Prefecture, approximately 50km west southwest of Miyazaki City and about 90km east northeast from Kagoshima City. It is a major city in the middle of Miyazaki and Kagoshima, bordering on Kagoshima prefecture from the northern part of the city to the west and the south.
