Kitakyushu City is an ordinance-designated city in the northern part of Fukuoka Prefecture.
Facing the Kanmon Strait, located at the northernmost end of Kyushu Island. It was born in 1963 with a new merger by five cities, and became the first ordinance designated city outside the three major metropolitan areas.
As of 2016, the population size is ranked 13th in the Japan City and second in the Kyushu region after Fukuoka City. Located in the northern part of Fukuoka Prefecture, it now has the second largest population and economy in Kyushu after Fukuoka City. The Kanmon metropolitan area is formed by the city and adjacent Yamaguchi Prefecture, Shimonoseki city, etc.
