The town has a population of about 12000 people in the eastern part of Yamagata Prefecture. It flourished in the fne of the northern front boat which used the top river in Edo period.
It is one of the birthplace of the potato boiling society. Located in the western part of the Yamagata Basin, surrounded by the OU Mountains and the Dewa Hills, the town area is almost flat, although there is a rolling hill in the west.
The north is a boundary between Yamagata City and Tendo City by the Sagae city in the top river and the east in Sugawa.
