The town is located in the north of Aomori Prefecture, in the northeastern part of the Tsugaru Peninsula. The town area is divided into parts of former Kanita town, old Syuntaro Hiradate village and former Minmaya village, and it is enclave across the Imabetsu town.
The former faces the Syuntaro Hiradate Strait which hits the entrance of Mutsu Bay, and the latter occupies the northern tip of the Tsugaru Strait and faces the Tsugaru Strait.
