The town is located in the northern inland region of Kagoshima Prefecture and belongs to Aira County. Located in an inland area about 70km northeast of Kagoshima City, in the northern part of Kagoshima Prefecture, this basin is surrounded by the Kyushu Mountains and the Kirishima mountain range.
It is a rainy climate peculiar to South Kyushu, and the difference of temperature of summer winter and day and night is remarkable in the cold winter as southern Kyushu because of the basin.
