The city is a city located in the Tamba region of central Kyoto Prefecture. The city limits the city to the east and west, and is shaped to separate Kyoto prefecture from north to south. It is an unusual city with a river Katsuragawa and the end which flows in the Yura River and the Pacific Ocean pouring into the sea of Japan. Kyoto Prefecture has an area second only to Kyoto city. Miyama District is a heavy snowfall area. The Yura River source basin at the foot of Mt. 959m is a vast natural forest of the Kyoto University's Ashinoko research forest.
