It is the central city of Hamada City and the western part of Shimane Prefecture, especially Ishiwa-gun and former Mino-gun.
It is called the Iwami Mita (Iwasaki-san) along with Hamada City and Ota city. The southern part of the city is in the western part of the Chinese mountains, with 1000m-class mountains.
