The city is the town of Shinkawa County in Toyama Prefecture. It is located in the mountain near the eastern part of Toyama Prefecture.
It is known as a place which leads to the back approach of Tateyama ascetics from ancient times. Located in the middle of the Shinkawa plain, about 15 km east of Toyama City, it is a rectangle with a long stretch southeast of 26.1 km and north-south. The area is the fifth largest in Toyama prefecture. The topography is cultural Nishi, and the majority of the town area occupies the mountainous district.
