Ishinomaki City is the second largest city in the prefecture, located in the eastern part of Miyagi prefecture. Due to the wide-area merger, the city was spread from the Sendai Plain (Ishinomaki Plain) downstream of the Kitakami River to the southern end of the Sanriku coast (Oshika Peninsula) except Onagawa town.
The former Kitakami River estuary has a central location with a population of approximately 210,000 people (as of the 2000 census) and 59,065 households (as of March 31, 2006).
