Kesennuma City is a city located on the Pacific coast at the northeast end of Miyagi prefecture. It is one of the cities representing Kesen County before the Boshin War, along with Ofunato City and Rikuzentakata City, located in the southern coast of Iwate prefecture. After the San after the Boshin War, it is transferred to Miyagi Prefecture on April 18, 1876, and it is put in Motoyoshi County though the present after this is called "Kesen".
