It is called Higo small country to distinguish it from Oguni town in Nishiokitama-gun in Yamagata Prefecture and Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture. It is located in the Kyushu Mountains in the northern part of Kumamoto Prefecture in central Kyushu. The eastern, northern and western areas of the town are bordered by Oita Prefecture.
