Akashi City is divided into the Hyogo Prefecture Higashi-Harima prefectural residents bureau in a city facing the Akashi Strait in the middle of the Kansai region and the southern part of Hyogo Prefecture.
In 2002, it was designated as a special city from the country. It became an important base of the sea traffic which connects Hanshin and Harima in ancient times to Shikoku through Awaji Island from Honshu, and Akashi Ferry was a gateway before the opening of Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. It is also the stage of the Tale of Genji.
