The city of Itako is located in the southeastern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. It is a city famous for the river which faces the Lake Kasumigaura, Kitaura, and Hitachi Tonegawa. It flourished as a port of Tonegawa waterways in the Edo period, and is now a corner of the KO Tsukuba quasi-national park.
It has a unique tourist attraction, such as the Itako of the river, a famous iris (Iris), and the twelve bridges around the rivers, and agriculture mainly for rice cultivation is flourishing.
On April 1, 2001, the town of Itako in the county transferred Yu town to municipal enforcement.
