The city of Kashima is located in the southeastern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. It prospered as a temple town of Kashima Shrine in the Hitachi country Ichinomiya.
It is an industrial city centering on a steel company as a corporate castle town of Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal which formed the Kashima Seaside Industrial zone centering on the Kashima Port which is an important port with Kamisu city now.
In addition, it is the center of the J. League Kashima Antlers Hometown (Itako City, Kamisu City, Hokota City, whereabouts City), and it is famous as the "town of Soccer" which is the leading in Kanto.
It was Kashima to change "island" to "Shima" of the variant character so as not to overlap with Kashima City in Saga Prefecture when municipal enforcement.
